Reflection 5 Drama

My fifth reflection is on an activity that I conducted during my last practicum block. I was in a grade 2 classroom and taught an inferring unit, which I connected with the drama strategy miming

One of the inferring lessons that I taught was called Mystery Bag in which students were given brown paper bags and index cards. They were told to find an item from the classroom that could fit in the brown paper bag. Then they were to secretly put the item in the bag and write 3 clues on the index card related to the item that they placed in the bag. Then the index card with the clues was stapled to the brown bag and the item was sealed inside the bag. The students engaged in an inferring carousel activity where they went around reading the clues that were on the mystery bags and wrote down their inferences on graphic organizer.

Later the students were asked to read the clues from their own mystery bag that they
created an the rest of the class mimed what they thought the object was or how it might look based on the clues that they heard. The students really enjoyed miming the actions based on the descriptive words used in the clues that were read.

Through using the inferring processing skill that is mentioned under the Thinking category of the Achievement Chart for the Arts, I feel that the students were able to show their understanding of the item in the bag through creatively moving their body. I feel that this connects with Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, as students were able to express their inferences in various different ways and engage in learning experiences that connected with different intelligences that as depicted in the theory.
